Bart Koubaa (b. 1968) studied Arabic and photography. In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, he caused a stir in Flanders with his rock band, Ze Noiz. In 2000, he made his debut as an author with the novel ‘Fire’ (Vuur), which won the Flemish Debut Prize. His controversial novel ‘The Teacher’ (De leraar, 2009) received very positive press and has had several reprints. In 'European Birds' (De vogels van Europa), Koubaa reconstructs what happened at a boys’ summer camp in 1980.
