Joris Vermassen

Joris Vermassen (b. 1964) lived for a while in the house where the renowned artist Frits Van den Berghe once lived. ‘Berg’ is the Dutch word for ‘mountain’ and this inspired Vermassen’s pseudonym: Fritz Van den Heuvel (heuvel = hill), a statement of both his artistic ambition and his sense of perspective. Over the past twenty years, he has created various projects using that nom de plume, including writing a series of absurdist comics, performing as a stand-up comedian and scripting the amusing children’s comic strip ‘De Bamburgers’ for artist Simon Spruyt. In 2014, Mad with Joy was published, his first graphic novel and his first work using his real name.
