Dutch illustrator Noëlle Smit (b. 1972) strikes a fine balance in her illustrations, which are both classic and humorous, melancholy and lively. She likes the style of illustrations from the 1950s. Her work is similar to that of Fiep Westendorp, especially in terms of her “use of lines, white backgrounds and the decorative quality of her illustrations", as she has pointed out herself. ‘Fiet Wants to Run’, with text by Bibi Dumon Tak, was chosen as the best picture book of 2011 in the Netherlands.
