'The Wanderer' on the 25 Best Children's Books list

Peter Van den Ende's debut 'Zwerveling' is selected by The New York Times for the annual 25 Best Children's Books list. His wordless black and white story, about a paper boat’s nighttime sea journey into the unknown, is published as 'The Wanderer' by Levine Querido (USA) and also by Pushkin (UK). German readers discover it as 'Treiben Lassen', the French as 'Odyssée', and Spanish children enjoy it as 'Travesía' or 'Travessia' (Catalonia).

Masterly crosshatching

The American illustrator Brain Selznick is impressed: "The technical aspect of the work is mind-boggling, especially the masterly crosshatching. Staring at the images, I couldn’t stop imagining Van den Ende, pen in hand, drawing each line, one after the other, creating work that seems to defy the passage of time, and all known resources of patience and imagination.”

Other awards

The book also received Zilveren Penseel (runner up award for best illustrations of the year) and was nominated for The Woutertje Pieterse Prijs 2020.
