A ‘no’ in a world that asks everything of you

=

WANG

In ‘=’ a girl lies flat on the ground, as a protest. In seventeen short scenes she is repeatedly approached by other characters representing the world: a tree, a river, a bicycle courier, the wind... They try to change her mind and get her moving again. But their efforts to talk her round come to nothing every time. The more the girl speaks with them about her choice, the more resolute her stasis becomes. The more the world attempts to pull at her, the more strongly she reformulates her refusal.

A sophisticated play, bursting with poetry and ambivalences.

‘=’ is an investigation into how the individual relates to the outside world and what resistance can mean. It poses the question of what happens when a person refuses to participate and endeavours to understand the world from a new perspective. By staying still as an act of rebellion, the central character shows how lying down, doing nothing for a while, disrupts the normative choreography of our late-capitalist world. Philosophical and highly poetic dialogues address themes like responsibility, loneliness and activism. The text clearly bears the unique signature of the Wang theatre collective, which attempts to interrogate the world through the lens of imagination and linguistic philosophy.
