Jaap Sie

Jaap Sie (b. 1941) worked in the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in Beijing as a translator, project manager, and researcher, after having worked several years in the medical field. In 1984 he began translating Dutch books as a hobby. He translated ‘Max Havelaar’ by Multatuli and ‘The Assault’ (De aanslag) by Harry Mulisch. After retiring in 2001 he was able to focus entirely on translation, including works by Tom Lemaire, Jelto Drenth, Marga Minco, Jaap ter Haar, Annie M.G. Schmidt and Theun de Vries. The Milky Way (De melkweg) by Bart Moeyaert is the first Flemish work of fiction for both children and adults to be translated directly from Dutch into Chinese.
