Jonathan Reeder

Jonathan Reeder (b. 1960), a native of New York and longtime Amsterdam resident, enjoys a dual career as performing musician and literary translator. After many years as an orchestral bassoonist, he now translates contemporary Dutch and Flemish fiction and nonfiction, as well as opera surtitles, programme notes and essays on classical music.

His published work – some twenty-five titles – includes authors both from Flanders (Tom Lanoye’s Cardboard Boxes, Roger Van de Velde’s Crackling Skulls and Bram Dehouck’s Sleepless Summer) and The Netherlands (Martin Michael Driessen’s Rivers and The Pelican, Donald Niedekker’s Strange and Perfect Account from the Permafrost and Michel Krielaars’ The Sound of Utopia).

Additionally Jonathan is an active mentor for emerging translators and has led masterclasses, workshops and mentorships for the KU Leuven, University of Sheffield, University of Amsterdam and the National Centre for Writing.
