Philippe Noble

Philippe Noble (b. 1949) has built an impressive oeuvre of translations from Dutch literature, with more than 60 titles, including works by J. Bernlef, Anne Frank, Arnon Grunberg, Stefan Hertmans, Etty Hillesum, Harry Mulisch, Multatuli, Cees Nooteboom, E. du Perron, P.F. Thomése, Miriam Van hee and David Van Reybrouck. He is the editor of a series Dutch and Flemish literature in translation for the French publisher Actes Sud. As such he published works by Lieve Joris, Lize Spit and Peter Terrin among others.

Philippe Noble was awarded several prizes for literary translation among which are the Martinus Nijhoff Prize 1981, Prix des Phares du Nord 2006 and Prix Alain Bosquet 2023. Alongside his translations he has contributed in various ways to promoting the visibility of Dutch literature in the French-speaking world.
