Pieter Aspe (1953-2021), Flanders’ best-read crime author, won virtually every single thriller award there is in his lifetime. In 1995 he introduced Inspecteur Van In to his readers in 'The Square of Revenge' (Het vierkant van de wraak), which marked the start of a successful series. The stories have since been adapted for television and have also been published in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Czech, Polish and Russian. One of the country’s biggest names in the thriller genre, Aspe was known as the Flemish Georges Simenon.
