Wide Vercnocke (b. 1985) describes himself as a ‘writer and illustrator of tearjerkers’. In his work, he combines a fascinating drawing style with abstract, poetic stories, always based around physicality and an absurd relationship. My Muse Lies on the Settee is about Vercnocke’s bond with his couch, while in his following book, Scar Tissue, the protagonists are a stag and a young woman, and in ‘Narwhal’ we follow the adventures of a hurdler and an equipment manager at a sports club.
