Travel Grants
Flanders Literature awards grants to foreign organisations that invite Flemish authors (writers, translators, illustrators, poets and graphic novelists) to events abroad that are closely linked to their literary activity. Such events may include readings, press presentations, festivals, book fairs, exhibitions, etc. Digital events are also eligible for the travel grant.
The grant covers, or contributes to, the travel expenses of Flemish authors who are invited abroad, or, in the case of a digital event, the costs incurred in organising the event for a maximum amount of 500 euros. We expect the organisation to provide a reasonable fee for the author. Flanders Literature provides an additional fee of 100 euros per event that will be paid directly into the author’s account, with a maximum of 500 euros per grant.

My Flanders Literature
Applications should be submitted through the online portal My Flanders Literature. Thanks for considering these instructions:
- When you invite several authors to your event, please submit one application per author.
- You need to be registered as a contact person for an organisation to apply for a grant through My Flanders Literature. You cannot apply for grants as an individual. Once you've logged in to the platform, please select 'Continue as the contact person of an organisation' on the page 'Who am I?'.
We have created a manual to guide you through the application process step by step. If you have any questions, chances are you will find the answers here. Please always follow the procedures described in the manual. If something is not clear, let us know!
FAQ
Is a travel grant intended solely for the promotion of new translations?
No. While one or more translated works are preferably available, a travel grant is not limited to newly published translations. It can also be used for reader meetings, festivals, illustration events or other forms of international literary exchange. The common thread is always the encounter between creator and audience.
What activities can I use a travel grant for?
A travel grant can support, among other things, presentations of translated books, public talks, school visits, literary festivals and press meetings.
Who can apply for a travel grant?
A travel grant is applied for by an international organiser or publisher wishing to invite an author, illustrator or translator from Flanders. This may be a publishing house, but also a festival, library, school, cultural centre or other professional organisation with a clear literary programme.
Is there a specific scheme for students of Dutch abroad?
Yes. For Dutch language and literature departments abroad, there is a dedicated scheme for in-person or online author visits. This scheme supports the aim of strengthening Dutch literature and language internationally and keeping them vibrant within educational contexts. Further information is available on the mijnNederlands website, an initiative of the Taalunie (Union for the Dutch Language).
Which costs are eligible for a travel grant?
A travel grant covers (part of) the travel expenses of the author, illustrator or translator. In addition, a supplementary fee of €100 per activity is available, up to a maximum of €500. For digital events, the travel grant covers technical costs and, for example, costs for subtitling.
